If Tavarish gets to do it, I do too.

Kinja'd!!!

The secondary timing chain tensioners had to be preventatively replaced, because they were plastic and the timing chain wanted to murder the engine.

The water pump had to be replaced, because the impeller was plastic and the car kept overheating and blowing hoses.

The thermostat was bad and had to be replaced, and I swapped the plastic housing with an aftermarket aluminum one at the same time.

There’s a small evap leak that triggers a code every 1-2 weeks, but cannot be tracked down. I miraculously got it through inspection once, but I’m hoping it will get worse before the car is due for inspection in 2017, or else I’ll just have to keep replacing the likely culprits until one works.

The driver door checkarm snapped in half and had to be replaced. This should have been a 30 minute job, but it took much more than that, because I’d spent 45 minutes filing through and prying out a stuck screw that later turned out to be a bolt.

Kinja'd!!!

The front shocks had to be replaced.

The rear passenger hub assembly had to be replaced.

The walnut trim around the gauge cluster and the one around the center A/C vents take turns rattling with seemingly no cure.

The center brake light housing is loose and rattles over large bumps, because it’s impossible to snap the housing into place without tearing it out of the rear window.

Kinja'd!!!

The rear view mirror used to fall off randomly until I took it apart and inserted slivers of electrical tape between the casing and the clip to add friction.

The rain sensor for the wipers likes to detach from the windshield.

The cupholders suck and have to be slowly guided out of their housing. Turning with a cup in them will send it flying in the opposite direction, stomping on the gas will send a travel mug into the rear seats.

The front end and hood are magnets for rocks and their accompanying paint chips

I’m not sure if the heated seats actually work or not.

In summary, it’s much smarter to buy and DD a 15 year old Jaguar than it is to buy and DD a 16 year old Mercedes.

Thanks! I’ve been in love with their looks since they first came out and finally decided that I needed to just bite the bullet and buy one.

my new cooling fan doesn;t arrive until Tuesday. since i have to assume the Service Position, which aparently is an hour process so I can’t just throw it in after work. I’m hoping every mile the fan doesn;t grenade. There are cracks everywhere

i decided on the electric conversion so i’m guessing that’s only going to add time as well.

I had to do those first 4 bullets on the 98 XJ8 I had! Except it wasn’t preventative. Thermostat went bad on the way to prom. The tensioner gave out on the day of my high school graduation.
Tip for the third brake light I learned when I bought the prior repo 98 model, a red bull can fits nicely underneath it and holds it in place while the glue dries to keep that POS in there.
On top of the rearview falling out, is it also foggy? My 94, 96, and 98 all did it. You’d think they would fix it. And no complaints about the headliner? Congrats! I had to do that in all three as well. Came loose around where the sunroof is.

With that, I love this body style and I love these cars. I’d own the 96 model again and again over the 98. The XJ6 was so much smoother and ever so slightly more reliable over the v8.

I don’t how electric fans haven’t been standard for much, much longer. Because mine is all I have to do is - unplug it, pop off a hose held down with the shroud & pull it out.

Kinja'd!!!

I like Quattro and I understand how they had to package it, but damn Service Position seems fucky.

With a 98, you’re lucky you didn’t also have the Nikasil engine.

I like the tip about the brake light, but it seems like glue would be a hassle when the bulb eventually blows.

Doh. I forgot the headliner. I have upholstery screws holding it up, because I don’t want to bother with putting in a new one yet.

I see your point about the XJ6, but I'd still keep the XJ8. Even the NA is 0.1 seconds faster to 60 than the XJR 6, and I like acceleration way too much

True, eventually it will be a hassle to replace that bulb...for someone else haha.
I’ve still got a stripped headliner laying around. I completed redid a couple from a junkyard car so make sure it stayed fixed.

I went Land Rover later on and all of these problems were the same in the LR: headliner, brake light, mirror fade, etc. Got to love it!

Fair enough! I had some kid argue with me about how great his XJR is. Went on and on about it. Hit him with the 1.4t in my car runs the same numbers as him (googled, but totally unchecked fact). He was very confused, I was surprised.

That makes me feel better, since an older Land Rover is definitely on my list of wants.

Yeah, I sometimes get jealous when I see an XJR and how fast they are, but then I read Jaguar forums and see all of the people suffering from supercharger problems and feel a bit better about sticking with the NA

I had an 01 Disco II - it might as well be a Jag SUV before they even considered the F pace.
My next dream land rover is a Range Rover Classic. I’ll have one some day
